Making Space for Creativity in Science

Launching the Bite of Tomorrow Early Career Researchers Community

Following the 2026 Annual Conference, the ECR community (Lisa Neidhardt) were delighted to host the Creativity in Science Workshop at Imperial College London. It was a day dedicated to exploring how creativity, curiosity, and interdisciplinary thinking can shape the future of sustainable food innovation.

This workshop marked the first event of the newly launched Bite of Tomorrow initiative, the Early Career Researcher community of the Bezos Centre for Sustainable Protein – Imperial and the UKRI Microbial Food Hub. The event was co-hosted together with the Filamentous Fungi Working Group (Thomas Gassler), bringing together researchers from across disciplines interested in microbial foods and sustainable protein innovation.

We were honoured to hear inspiring perspectives from our fantastic speakers: David Kaplan, Vayu Hill-Maini, Alexis Walker, Yixing Sui and our wonderful facilitator Giada Centenaro guiding us through practical exercises around the creative process.

Through keynote talks, discussions, and interactive sessions, we explored how creativity plays a crucial role in tackling complex global challenges such as building sustainable and resilient food systems.

A special thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to the thoughtful conversations throughout the day!

Events like this remind us that advancing sustainable protein innovation is not only about developing new technologies, it is also about creating spaces where ideas, disciplines, and people can connect in new ways
